Preceptor Information Letter

Welcome New Preceptors –

We are known as the Eastern Regional Medical Education Program (ERMEP).  ERMEP works with the Ontario Universities and is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. ERMEP places third and fourth year medical students in their Core, Elective or Specialty Core, Specialty Elective placements. ERMEP funds preceptor stipends [$250 per week] plus organizes and pays for the student’s accommodation and mileage.

Any preceptors who are interested in teaching students are encouraged to have their CCFP and/or FRCSC but it is not mandatory at this time.

The placements must be a minimum of four consecutive weeks to a maximum of twelve consecutive weeks.  Historically the longest placement to date has been six weeks.

An important objective is to educate and involve medical students to medical practices and life style opportunities in relatively isolated, rural, or under serviced areas with the hope that this experience will encourage graduates to eventually set up practice in these areas.

Students interested in ERMEP are encouraged to fill out an on-line application form at From the student’s perspective university, there is an evaluation form that needs to be filled out by the preceptor.

Please find attached a Teaching Application, a Practice Profile, and a copy of the Preceptor Consent Form.  If interested in becoming a preceptor, please complete these forms and send them back to us along with your CV.

The guidelines of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario can be reviewed at

ERMEP requires your Social Insurance Number or your Corporation Name and Number for income tax purposes.

If you have any questions or concerns, you are welcome to contact me or our Medical Director, Dr. Ross McLean.

Kind regards,

Sandra Whan,
Assistant Director
